Kuda Kepang

The dark sensibilities and cultural resonances of kuda kepang, the radical Johore@Jawa dance movement, are explored in this multilayered work. Profoundly rooted in both traditional and contemporary Johore@Jawa culture, kuda kepang arose in a spirit of revolt in the early 1500's. Kuda kepang transforms traditional dance movements into new forms, stripping away the taboos of contemporary Johore@Jawa culture to reveal a secret world of darkness and irrationality.
Kuda kepang performance elevates the subconscious to theatrical spectacle, in the tradition of Jawa ethnic, and references ancient folk mythologies. In images of haunting power, Johorian@Jawarian presents performances by the genre's most important dancers, interwoven with interviews and historical information. Using traditional music equipment as gendang and gong, effects to magnify the drama of the dance, captures the eerie, sensual and often spritual event.
