Shadow Show

Shadow Show (wayang kulit) is a unique form of theatre originating from the state of Kelantan. It is influenced by the Malays in term of speech and costumes. Shadow show (wayang kulit) is actually a form puppet show but unlike ordinary puppet show, it uses the principle of light and shadow.

The puppets are made from buffalo hide and mounted on bamboo sticks. They then held up behind a piece of white curtain cloth witch act as a screen with a lamp as a light source.
The end result is that audience only see the pupptes shadows perform instead of the real puppets.

The story used in shadow show are those of romantic tales from the Indian's epic, the Mahabratta and Ramayana.



They focus on the triumph of good over evil and genius behind the entire perfomance is the Tok Dalang, the pupperteer.
Acompanied by a traditional orchestra, Tok Dalang narrated the story by modulating his voice to carter to each character played.
